The land at Lenny’s Point, Bicheno was originally dedicated as Public Open Space as part of a subdivision development application approved by the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council.
However, the council has now called for “Expressions of Interest” in the land, despite more than 440 people signing a petition against the sale and 15 written submissions to council opposing the sale.
Lenny’s Point is greatly loved by locals. It provides access to the headland, great surf breaks and an ecological assessment identified endangered flora.
This issue highlights the increasing tendency of local councils to sell off public assets – in this case public land that is highly valued by the local community and has significant natural and cultural values – for short term financial gain.
Local east coast community groups are hosting a picnic to keep Lenny’s Point in public hands.
You can support their campaign by joining the picnic on Saturday 13 January.
Directions: RA311 Harveys Farm Rd Bicheno. Follow the black and yellow tape from the Harveys Farm Road parking bay.
BYO: food and drink, chairs or a rug.
