Planning protects our environment — and your support powers that work.
It’s not just our cities and towns that need best practice planning to thrive — our natural environment, communities and democracy do too. More than 50% of Tasmania is made up of precious World Heritage Areas, National Parks and Reserves — but whether those places are protected or put at risk is decided by our planning laws.
PMAT is the only organisation in lutruwita/Tasmania solely focused on advocating for better planning for people and nature. Our work spans the full breadth of planning in Tasmania — from protecting our coastlines, national parks and healthy landscapes, to housing, Aboriginal cultural heritage, state elections and the public’s right to have a say. We’re proudly independent — and that means we rely entirely on your support.
Every donation, large or small, goes directly towards our submissions, campaigns, community guides, events and public meetings. If you can, please consider becoming a regular monthly donor — your ongoing support is the most powerful way to help us keep doing the work that makes a real difference for Tasmania’s people, places and natural environment.
See What Your Support Makes Possible
PMAT works across the full breadth of planning in Tasmania — from protecting our coastlines, national parks, healthy landscapes and natural environment, to housing, Aboriginal cultural heritage, residential standards, Regional Land Use Strategies, heritage, transparency and democracy, and the public’s right to have a say in decisions that shape their communities. Your support is what makes all of it possible.

Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania makes an important contribution to public debate, particularly in the context of the Tasmanian Parliament. PMAT has earned a strong reputation amongst parliamentarians of all stripes for its provision of professional, thorough and credible briefings, in which potentially complex planning matters are distilled into an accessible and informative format.
As a busy and under-resourced Member of the Legislative Council, I can attest to the value of both the written and verbal briefings provided by PMAT, which have delivered a useful critique of planning matters before the parliament. PMAT’s success in supporting individuals and communities to mobilise and engage in consultation processes and legislative advocacy contributes to a healthy democracy. I value the strong role PMAT plays in ensuring our democratic decision-making processes remain as robust and evidence-based as possible.
