The Tasmanian government has announced the introduction of Development Assessment Panels (DAPs). DAPs will allow certain developments to be determined by panels appointed by the planning commission, allowing developers to effectively go around local councils.

Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania’s Sophie Underwood and Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley tell Leon Compton on Tasmania Mornings that the move is designed to sideline councils, stakeholders and communities.

But Planning Minister, Felix Ellis, tells Leon that good developments are being knocked back.

“We have got too many good developments being knocked back by local councils … the reason they get knocked back is because of NIMBY politics”, he says.

However, the Planning Minister is misleading about how DAP developments will be assessed.

The truth is DAP ‘asssesssed’ developments WILL NOT HAVE TO COMPLY WITH LOCAL PLANNING RULES. Ten years of implementing the statewide scheme will be irrelevant.

Labor sent in a statement to the program but we are unsure what their position is on the draft DAP legislation.

The draft DAP legislation could be debated as early as next week Tuesday 19 November as the Tasmanian Liberal Government try and ram it through the parliament in the last two sitting weeks of the year.

Listen to PMAT’s State Director Sophie Underwood, and Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley on ABC Mornings speaking about why Development Assessment Panels (DAPs) are terrible for local communities and will take our voice away.
