Thank you to all of you who came today to our packed-out #ScrapTheDAP public meeting at the Hobart Town Hall.

PMAT hosted, what we predict to be the largest public meeting during the State Election campaign, with over 400 attendees, including at least 12 State election candidates.

Since coming to office, the Tasmanian Liberal Government has changed planning laws dramatically and has reduced the power of local councils to make decisions about developments across Tasmania. This has weakened the rights of local communities to have a say about developments that affect their own home, their local streets and town and their most treasured National Parks and Reserves.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has proposed further weakening the role of Councils by legislating for Development Assessment Panels (DAPs). DAPs take development assessment and approval from local Councils and remove planning appeal rights and with it the voice of the community.

These changes are proposed for all urban/private land and our World Heritage Areas, National Parks and reserves and make it easier for developers to bypass local councils and communities.

Guest Speakers:

John Dowson – President, Fremantle Society, former Deputy Mayor and Councillor, City of Fremantle, WA.

Dr Phillipa McCormack – Adjunct Lecturer in Law, University of Tasmania & researcher with the University of Adelaide with expertise in environmental regulation & administrative law.

Alice Hardinge – Tasmanian Campaigns Manager, Wilderness Society Tasmania.

Anja Hilkemeijer – Lecturer in law at the University of Tasmania, with a focus on foundations of public law, constitutional law and human rights law.

Mayor Anna Reynolds – Lord Mayor & Councillor, Hobart City Council.
