PMAT Deloraine Community Meeting to Scrap Development Assessment Panels (DAPs) and Maintain Planning Appeal Rights.

65 people attended PMAT’s public meeting and two motions were passed unanimously by show of hands. See motions below.

PMAT co-hosted the meeting with The Wilderness Society, The Tasmanian Conservation Trust, The Tasmanian National Parks Association, No Meander Valley Prison, Mine Watch Meander Valley, Westbury Region Against the Prison Inc and Fishers and Walkers Tasmania.

PMAT would like to acknowledge our elected representatives who made a big effort to attend our public meeting. It is very much appreciated and noted.

The four elected representatives who attended were:

Tabatha Badger – Greens Member for Lyons
Councillor Anne-Marie Loader of Meander Valley Council
Councillor Rodeny Synfield of Meander Valley Council
Councillor John Temple of Meander Valley Council

One Legislative Council candidate also attended, which again was very much appreciated and noted:

Dr Darren Briggs, Greens Candidate for the upper house/Legislative Council seat of Montgomery.

Motion 1: The meeting calls upon the Meander Valley Council to reject any removal of third-party planning appeal rights.

Unanimously carried. Motion passed through show of hands.

Motion 2: The Meander Valley Council previously opposed the 2024 Development Assessment Panel (DAP) Bill. The meeting calls on the Council to oppose the Draft Land Use Planning and Approvals Amendment (Development Assessment Panels) Bill 2025 which is nearly identical to the previous Bill.

Seconded: Harvey Gee

Unanimously carried. Motion passed through show of hands.

*Note – Councillors Anne-Marie Loader, Rodeny Synfield and John Temple of Meander Valley Council abstained to vote on both motions ensuring they could vote freely on any motions presented to Meander Valley Council.

Event information:
The Tasmanian Liberal Government want to remove planning appeal rights and replace local councils with a “developer-friendly” assessment and approval process (DAPs), on private and public land, including our World Heritage Areas and National Parks.

It is critical for transparency, democracy and good planning that checks and balances are in place, ensuring property developers and decision makers are kept to account. DAPs and removal of appeal rights put these at risk and take local councillors, voters, ratepayers and communities out of planning.

The Government has released a draft DAP Bill with public comment closing 24 April 2025.
