Voters won’t know who’s funding council candidates this election.

Despite a pledge from the state Liberals to reform campaign finance laws, council candidates won’t have to disclose political donations ahead of this year’s local government elections. Tasmania remains the only jurisdiction in Australia without a mandated donation disclosure scheme for council elections, and new rules won’t be implemented until after October’s vote.

As PMAT’s Sophie Underwood put it: voters have a right to know who’s financially supporting candidates, especially when property developers could be influencing council decision-making.

In the lead-up to the council elections, PMAT will be surveying candidates to help our community better understand where they stand.
