RE: PMAT Submission: Consultation on Local Government Electoral Legislation: Local Government Electoral Bill 2025 and Local Government Amendment (Electoral Reforms) Bill 2025.
The Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania (PMAT) thanks the Office of Local Government for the opportunity to comment on proposed reforms to local government elections in Tasmania as outlined here.
The Tasmanian Government invited public comment on draft legislation which will change how local government elections will be conducted in Tasmania.
Two draft bills were released for public consultation for a for a 13-week consultation period until Saturday 28 February 2026:
1. A new, standalone Local Government Electoral Bill 2025 for future council elections
2. A Local Government Amendment (Electoral Reforms) Bill 2025, delivering a number of reforms to the Local Government Act 1993 supporting the broader elections framework
