The controversial Major Projects Bill passed the Legislative Council this morning (Thursday 24 September 2020) with no significant amendments. All of the amendments put by the Member for Nelson Hon Meg Webb and supported by Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania and Tasmanian Conservation Trust were unsuccessful. The amendments that were included were very minor and we anticipate the final bill is likely to pass by the House of Assembly today.
The Gutwein Government’s new planning process to assess development proposals in Tasmania is expected to be tabled in Parliament this week, with a House of Assembly vote on the developer-friendly approval process possible as early as Thursday.

In what is likely to be the biggest survey of candidates in the upcoming local government elections, the Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania (PMAT) has revealed strong candidate sentiment for local government planning controls that protect local character, sunlight and privacy for our homes and facilitate public involvement in planning decisions in national parks and reserves.
The RAA process governs the Parks and Wildlife Service’s assessment of proposed developments on approximately 50% of Tasmania, so it’s essential the process is robust.
PMAT helped secure eight amendments to the Land Use Planning Approvals Amendment (Tasmanian Planning Policies and Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2018. This passed with tri-partisan support in the Tasmanian Parliament in November 2018.

Elections are being held for 28 local government councils across Tasmania, with 481 individual candidates standing for councillor. Of those Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania managed to contact 407 candidates, asking them to complete this survey – 144 completed the survey.
